MaplePrimes Questions and Posts

With the launch of ChatGPT 5.0, many people are testing it out and circulating their results. In our “random” Slack channel, where we share anything interesting that crosses our path, Filipe from IT posted one that stood out. He’d come across a simple math problem, double-checked it himself, and confirmed it was real:

ChatGPT 5.0 Example

As you can see, the AI-generated solution walked through clean, logical-looking steps and somehow concluded:

x = –0.21

I have two engineering degrees, and if I hadn’t known there was an error, I might not have spotted it. If I’d been tired, distracted, or rushing, I would have almost certainly missed it because I would have assumed AI could handle something this simple.

Most of us in the MaplePrimes community already understand that AI needs to be used with care. But our students may not always remember, especially at the start of the school year if they’ve already grown used to relying on AI without question.

And if we’re honest, trusting without double-checking isn’t new. Before AI, plenty of us took shortcuts: splitting up the work, swapping answers, and just assuming they were right. I remember doing it myself in university, sometimes without even thinking twice. The tools might be different now, but that habit of skipping the “are we sure?” step has been around for a long time.

The difference now is that general-purpose AI tools such as ChatGPT have become the first place we turn for almost anything we do. They respond confidently and are often correct, which can lead us to become complacent. We trust them without question. If students develop the habit of doing this, especially while they are still learning, the stakes can be much higher as they carry those habits into work, research, and other areas of their lives.

The example above is making its rounds on social media because it’s memorable. It’s a basic problem, yet the AI still got it wrong and in a way that’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

Using it in the classroom can be a great way to help students remember that AI’s answers need to be checked. It’s not about discouraging them from using AI, but about reinforcing the habit of verifying results and thinking critically about what they see.

So here’s my suggestion:

  • Show this example in your class, no matter the subject. If your students are using AI, they’ll benefit from seeing it.
  • Spend 10 minutes discussing it.
  • Use it as a jumping-off point to talk about what’s OK and not OK when using AI for your course.
  • Share other examples like this throughout the year as small reminders, so “critical thinking” becomes second nature.

This isn’t just about catching an AI’s bad subtraction. It’s about building a culture of verification and reasoning in our students. The tools will keep improving, but so will the temptation to turn off our own thinking.

If we can help students get into the habit of checking, AI can be a powerful partner without putting them on autopilot.

To the MaplePrimes community: How do you talk to your students to help them build strong habits when working with AI? Do you bring in examples like this one, or use other strategies? I’d love it if you could share your thoughts, tips, and ideas.

When i paste the code , its not keeping its same outline as in the worksheet  ?
 using this

I tried to change my email adress but after submitting changes I still get my old email listed.

Additionally to only changing the email I also changed my password.

Nothing worked. What could I have done wrong?

I created a temporary account because I could not log in after the recent shutdown of MaplePrimes.

The login issue is resolved and I do not need the temporary account any longer.

How can I delete the temporary account. Edit: deletion is not the primary objective. Making the account inactive would do as well.

I am probably overlooking this option

For years I used to use 2 accounts when I am home

  • one under Firefox corresponds to my profesionnal account, which I can access to from my office oror home (and which is the one I use here),
  • the other one under Safari is my "personal" account; (login mmcdara)  which I cannot access to from my office because of security rules.

To separate the managing of professional and personal accounts I always used the former under Firefox and the latter under Safari.
Since the outage my personal account is no longer accessible, neither from Safari nor Firefox.

I created this account about eight years ago using the adress michael.mcdara@gmail.com and during all these years the connexion to Mapleprimes from Safari was  "automatic" in the sense that I was always logged in as mmcdara. Even after having quit Safari or shut down my computer, I was logged in as mmcdara as soon as I reopened Mapleprimes (a curiosity, for quitting Firefox being logged in as sand15 and openening it again required my relogging as sand15).

This still was the case early this morning (I sent replied to andiguy) but not one hour after.
Indeed Mapleprimes asked me my mail adress, that I knew, and my password, that I have forgot, of course.

Eight years ago the double authentification was not mandatory and so Gmail has purely and simply made the adress michael.mcdara@gmail.com inaccesible in between (I used it only with Mapleprimes, thus no real need to look at it regularly nor to bother with this double authentification stuff... at least I thought).
So any attempt to ask for a reinitialization of my password is a dead end for I cannot access the address michael.mcdara@gmail.com

My main activity on Mapleprimes is realized using my mmcdara account.
What bothers me the most  (loosing my mmcdara account would be unplesant but I can survive this) is that I was working since several months on two or three posts and that I can't anymore access the corresponding drafts (not a deadly situation I cannot survive to neither).

Do you have any idea about how to solve these issues?
I would satisfy myself recovering the two or three post drafts I was working on.

Thanks in advance

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the recent outage of MaplePrimes. The outage was caused by a server issue. We have obtained and configured a replacement to prevent disruptions moving forward. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

In a recent MaplePrimes question: https://mapleprimes.com/questions/240543-Maple-20251-On-Windows-11-How-To-Resize

a discussion of interrupting a computation also came up.

I gave some comments. In one of these I wanted to include a link to a screenshot.
I tried several times. It seemed that I only had the choice between the full image or a thumb nail.
So I chose the latter. That appeared to me as worthless. I tried a couple of times more, but decided to delete all 3.

Then I wrote a comment without a screenshot.

It looks silly to have these empty (and anonymous) "comments" still around.
Is there any way to remove these?

Same question for googletagmanager.

The NoScript extension for Firefox lists the following java scripts

I do not see a degradation in performance when these scripts are disabled. So why are these scripts running?

What do they do?

There may be one more paper coming in to the proceedings later as per policy; since most things are ready, away we go!

Proceedings of the Maple 2024 Conferenc

The last few mornings there's been a high rate of spam.  I just deleted 5 or 6 posts.  How are they getting through and why haven't they stopped?

What's with some of the older posts missing images?  Were they deleted by maplesoft to save space on mapleprimes servers?  (Storage is pretty cheap these days)

I actually replaced some images a while ago, maybe a few years back.  However I've come across the post again and the image is gone ... strange.  Maybe there's an AI at work here clearing out images.

In some cases the images are just the output of Maple code plots.  That's ok to remove, I guess, but in others, people have used screenshots which contain code that have been removed where in some cases after they're removed make the entire thread useless.  It's not often but it occurs.

Anyways, does mapleprimes sometimes clear out images?  Or is it an inadvertent effect when some maintenance is performed?

This should be a rule.

If replies and answers are deleted  then there must be a secondary acknowledgement from the original poster to do so.  The reply or answer can not be deleted under the response of another person and only the acknowledgment of the top poster / questioneer will that, answer/reply, be allowed to be deleted.

Also goes with re-organizing the order of replies/answers - only happens if the person who started the thread acknowledges the action.

Too many times have answers / replies been jumbled out of order.  Just because it makes sense for one person, doesn't mean it makes sense for everyone.

edit added *** this is also to cure the mandella effect in this forum (or perhaps you just thought you were getting dementia) .... I swear someone answered this post but where did that answer go?  ******

Where is my question ?
No reason to delete this...nothing copy righted code

I don't know what combination of keys I used, but I deleted all the answers and comments to this question in one go.

Can some moderator recover all of them?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the inconvenience
