Thank you very much for your replies. I really didn't know this simplification required introducing some clever new procedure. I guess if we want to have something done our way It is the only possible solution.

You first solution works extremely fine. The only problem is that I want to pass this simplified form that I've obtained with your procedure into fortran for a precise evaluation but I get the error

Error, (in analyzetab[_Inert_FUNCTION]) only named functions are supported
I guess it is because now maple doesn't know anymore what to do with (a/b)^2. Do you know a work around this?
